The CMC Markets Trading Challenge offers students the chance to take their investing out of the textbooks and into the real world. Run off the CMC Markets trading platform, the competition provides the opportunity to dive into the markets without risking any personal funds. If that wasn’t enough incentive to get involved, up for grabs is a $2,000 prize pool!

Teams will be given an account with $50,000 of virtual money and three weeks to maximise their returns. The CMC Markets platform supports a broad range of financial instruments including equities, currency, fixed income and commodities so there is no limit to how creative you can get with your strategies.

Entry costs $5 per team for paid MCC members from the University of Auckland and $15 per team for participants from other universities. You can enter as a team of two, or individually.

Teams will be given an account with $50,000 virtual money and will be able to trade a range of financial products (equity, currency, commodity, fixed income) on the CMC Markets platform with the aim of generating the highest return on their portfolio to win cash prizes. There will also be professional traders holding a tutorial so it’s a great opportunity to learn more about trading and investing. The main prizes will be for the teams with the greatest return on investment, but also look out for the bonus prizes throughout the competition!

You will be able to trade not only through an internet browser but also through apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, hence allowing you to trade anywhere and anytime.

Competition Rules Overview:

  1. Teams of one or two students can enter. All teams must comprise of students from the same university.
  2. There is an entry fee of $5 per team for paid University of Auckland MCC members and $15 per team for entrants from other universities.
  3. You are not allowed to trade until the trading period starts
  4. You are allowed to buy back until the end of week 1 (1 buy back per team). You will be given $10,000 virtual money back.

Registrations Open: Saturday 20th April
Registrations Close: Friday 3rd May
Tutorial: 6pm Thursday 2nd May
Trading Starts: Monday 6th May
Trading Ends: Saturday 25th May
Prizegiving and networking: Tuesday 28th May

These prizes will go to the teams with the highest portfolio values (ROI) at the end of the competition.

  • First Place: $1,000
  • Second Place: $500
  • Third Place: $300

There will also be $200 worth of spot prizes up for grabs
